"debate"

There's no love in Kulyenchikov, it's part of the curse. And we're all so ignorant... I love straight plays *almost* as much as I love musicals. And Kulyenchikov is the setting for "Fools" which is an excellent play. Go see it if it is being performed near you.

So yesterday I observed three debate rounds. Once again, Joshua did not do to well. Poor baby. I feel so sorry for him. But he did win one of the rounds I watched. His opponent was a terrible debater. I walked away from that round and as soon as the door shut I laughed... All the way down the hall. But Joshua did very well in his speeches, very convincing. His cross-examination was great, too. I'm learning a lot from watching him. He seems to think he is terrible, but I am learning what and what not to do, what is most convincing.

I love *my* new team. Agh!!! MY team. To me, this is very exciting. I was accepted and they talk to me. It's nice, though, because I'm not just Joshua's girlfriend. And before, with his friends, I was more his girlfriend than my own person. You know what I mean? I'm me and I don't have to hide behind him. I can be me. And the team is really cool, though some of the novices are freaky like me. They're writing a rock opera about Lincoln-Douglas debate. The entire team is in it, Joshua and I are the romance, and there's Dancing Swedish Fish. (Why am I approving of this? It is madness. Swedish Fish just do not dance.)

Tournaments are so much fun, even when you aren't debating. There's this excitement and busyness that just surrounds everything and going from round to round is fun, but breaks are great too. And when schematics (schems) come everybody rushes over to get them and there's this stampede of geeky debaters. You can get run over in those stampedes.

But tournaments are also very exhausting, even if you aren't debating. Watching makes me so tired, and I don't know why. Maybe because I am flowing and flowing. But writing doesn't make me tired. But honestly, after awhile, it is basically "SHUT UP ALREADY!" Sometimes, watching two debaters going at it (NOT like that... not at all) is just so not thrilling.

Hey I have a question for debaters out there... At tournaments, if you are in one room for a round, and then are in that room for the next round, does that mean you won the previous round? I have heard it from several people, including Joshua. And it makes sense. Last year, I was in one room, I won the round, was in the room for the next round, I won that round, and was in that room for the last round... Which I then lost.

So debate filled...

Our power went out last night. Some tree went down somewhere else in the village and we didn't have power for awhile. It was pretty funny, because we were in the middle of watching "The Green Mile" and they were about to execute Delacroix (the French-Cajun guy who loved Mr. Jingles the mouse) and the TV went off, and then on, and then off, and then on, and then it went off for good. And the lights were flickering. Quite nice special effects, I must say. :-)

I have to write an essay on the Lincoln-Douglas debates. Such a geek... That's me. (I decided on that topic all on my own.) The essay has to be 500 to 750 words long. I think I can do it. I'm writing about the Lincoln-Douglas debates of 1858 and then I am going to talk about the LD debate format and such. Pretty cool, right? Nah, it's pretty geeky.

Oh here's a conversation we had yesterday at the tourney. What is the difference between a geek and a nerd? Yes, we were talking about this, partially because we were trying to figure what Joshua is. :-) I know, I am such a nice girlfriend, trying to figure out if my boyfriend is a geek or a nerd. But we had some trouble defining those terms.

Agh. Definitions. A debate thing. Too much debate turns you into me. :-) Not that that is a bad thing.

Alright, I am out for now. I may come back. I don't know. :-)

I love Joshua.
